NEW DELHI – With the January 21st deadline fast approaching, the standoff between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reached a fever pitch. While the ICC maintains that India remains a safe host, Bangladesh’s top sports official has lashed out at the global body, calling for a “logical” venue change.1

The controversy, which has simmered for weeks following the BCCI’s directive to IPL franchises regarding player safety and regional tensions, has now put Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup in serious jeopardy. Reports from the ICC inner circle suggest that if Dhaka does not commit by Wednesday, Scotland—the highest-ranked non-qualifier—is ready to step in.2

“Unrealistic Pressure”: Bangladesh Hits Back

In a fiery press conference on Tuesday, Bangladesh’s Youth and Sports Adviser, Asif Nazrul, accused the ICC of siding with Indian interests.3 Nazrul argued that if India can refuse to travel to Pakistan on security grounds, Bangladesh should be granted similar concessions.

“We can’t be forced to play in India with unreasonable and unrealistic pressure. Haven’t heard formally that they will exclude us and take Scotland instead. If ICC bows to BCCI and puts pressure on us, if they put unrealistic demands, we will not accept. There have been examples where India has refused to travel to Pakistan, ICC changed the venue.4 We have asked for venue change, for a logical reason. They can’t force us to play in India by exerting undue and unreasonable pressure,” Nazrul said.5

The BCCI and ICC Stance

While the BCB cites security concerns, the ICC’s internal threat assessment has reportedly categorized the risk in India as “low to moderate.”6 The BCCI has largely remained silent on the matter, with Secretary Devajit Saikia previously noting that tournament logistics and participation are strictly within the ICC’s domain.

However, the clock is ticking. The T20 World Cup is scheduled to begin on February 7, and the logistical nightmare of shifting matches at this late stage makes a venue change highly unlikely.7

What’s at Stake for Bangladesh?

If the BCB maintains its refusal to travel to India, the consequences could be severe:

  • Tournament Exclusion: Scotland is already being touted as the replacement side.8
  • Forfeiture of Points: Should the ICC reject the move, Bangladesh could forfeit their group matches against the West Indies, Italy, England, and Nepal.
  • Financial Penalties: Under ICC regulations, a member board refusing to play after a schedule is finalized can face millions in fines and a reduction in revenue share.9
